Well the title pretty much sums up it up. We’ve been house sitting in Cali for the last month and a half.
After being on the road non-stop from July through October, in countries where English wasn’t the native tongue and we couldn’t find salsa, fish sauce or IPA in the markets, Laura and I were ready for a little down time in a place that could feel like home. And we definitely found it.
We’ve been living in the beach town of Morro Bay in a cute little beach bungalow, cooking, having a somewhat regular workout routine, and going to the movies. All things we didn’t do as regularly when moving around traveling.
But most importantly this house sit has been much smoother than our last one in France. We haven’t had any issues with bed bugs, nor has the cat had a horrible accident!
We also love this town. The compact downtown is cute and walkable from the house. It has that small town feel where everyone we encounter smiles, says hi, and chats you up. Maybe that’s because most of them are mellow surfers that enjoy a slower pace of life.
Sometimes in the afternoon we head over to Sun-N-Buns for a snack, there’s also a hole-in-the-wall pizza place run by surfers for a cheap eat, and a wine bar that serves up the local Central Coast wines which have been surprisingly good.
Five minutes from the house there is a long wide sandy beach for runs and late afternoon walks to watch the sun disappear into the Pacific Ocean. Morro Bay State Park is 2 blocks from the house and with a short climb offers views over the surrounding area. We’ve run up the trail for a heart pounding workout. And we’ve taken slow walks up for sunset.
And for those that don’t know where the small town of Morro Bay is, don’t feel bad, we didn’t either until this house sit. We’re smack dab between San Francisco and L.A. It’s part of the gorgeous Central Coast of California, that we had somehow neglected to visit when we were living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Central Coast is packed with endless beaches and coastline for exploring. Both soft sand beaches for digging your toes into and lazing around on, and rugged rocky beaches that are wind swept.
There’s also abundant bird and ocean wildlife. My favorite are the pelicans as they dive bomb the water and then at the last second pull up to skim the surface with their incredibly long wing spans. And of course the adorably cute sea otters as they lounge on their backs with their little paws and heads poking through the surface of the water. In order to get a better look at all these creatures Laura has started carrying the binoculars with us when we go exploring.
Let’s see, we’ve been to Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo, and our favorite so far, Estero Bluffs State Park. The park parallels the coast with a nice easy trail 20 feet above the water. You get to look down the cliffs at the sandy and pebbly beaches below. Just offshore are large rocks that the birds like to perch on. And you’ll also see some crazy surfers that must know where all the rocks are hidden if they’re surfing these shores.
And oh, it’s 65 to 70 degrees and sunny most days, even though it’s December. What more could we ask for?
Maybe, just maybe, the Central Coast is a place I could call home in the future…
